House Calls on the Hill Now Open
Heidi Johnson, CPNP, has started House Calls on the Hill, a pediatric urgent care house-call practice. Johnson is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner who is licensed to diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for children ages newborn to college. She has 15 years experience as a CPNP and spent the past eight years working at Pullman & Ariza Pediatrics in Foggy Bottom before deciding to start her own practice on the Hill. Johnson is available to see your child in your house on Capitol Hill for various ailments, such as fevers, ear infections, pinkeye, pneumonia, asthma, skin conditions, rashes, strep throat and simple lacerations, as well as healthy visits for ear piercing or general newborn care.

Johnson can be reached seven days a week from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. at 202-306-5862 and can usually see your child within one to two hours of your call. Wild Side Stage at the National Zoo
This winter, Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) will present Wild Side Stage, a new performance series for children featuring acclaimed, award-winning musicians, dancers, storytellers and puppeteers from around the country. Performances will take place in the National Zoo's visitor center auditorium on Sundays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Before and after each performance (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), guests can visit certain animal exhibits for the chance to meet animal keepers as well as the animals featured in the performances. The Sunday performance schedule for January is: Jan. 10, Brady Rymer (ages 2 and up), and Jan. 24, CityDance Ensemble (ages 3 and up). Looking ahead, the first performance in February is Feb. 7, DinoRock (ages 4 and up). Tickets are $5 for FONZ members, $7 for nonmembers. Adults and children ages 2 and older require tickets. Children under 2 are admitted free with a parent. Congratulations to the Watkins Hornets!
On Dec. 12, the Watkins Hornets football team won the Pop Warner Division I Pee Wee National Football Championship by defeating the Florida City Razorbacks of Miami, Florida. The Hornets, a DC Department of Parks and Recreation football team from Watkins Recreation Center, defeated last year’s reigning champions, the White Oak Warriors, and advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Florida, where they defeated the Southfield Falcons from Michigan and the Arlington Thunder from Texas. The Hornets finished the season with a perfect record of 15-0. Watkins Recreation Center is located at 420 12th St. SE. Capitol Hill Family Square Dancing at Eastern Market
The Capitol Hill Dance Society will hold its next family square dance on Jan. 23, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Eastern Market’s North Hall. Admission is $5 per person, family maximum of $20, under 5 free. Refreshments will be served. Eastern Market’s North Hall is located on Capitol Hill at the corner of North Carolina Avenue and Seventh Street SE. All ages are welcome, and no dance experience is necessary. An experienced caller will guide the dancers through all the movements. The North Hall Family Square-Dances feature live music by the Capitol Hillbillies, led by Washington-area musician and Capitol Hill resident Joel Bailes. The North Hall family square dances are held monthly. The next dances are scheduled Feb. 20, March 20, April 17 and May 22 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The North Hall Family Dances are sponsored by the Capitol Hill Dance Society, a group of Capitol Hill parents and residents interested in promoting square- and contra-dancing on Capitol Hill as the perfect activity which all ages can share together, through the fun of dancing to live music by local musicians. The North Hall Family Square Dances are supported by a generous grant from the Capitol Hill Community Foundation.

Youth Choir Auditions and Acting Workshop at the Atlas
American Youth Chorus, DC's new choral group for children ages 8-14, is holding auditions this month for its spring 2010 season, which includes performances at the Atlas Performing Arts Center and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. The chorus is looking to expand its ranks to over 60 children in 2010. Rehearsals are held weekly, after school, at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE. MASSIVE Company Acting workshop for youth takes place Jan. 23 and 24 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St. NE). Sam Scott, artistic director of New Zealand's Massive Company, leads this workshop, which is designed for young people ages 15-25. This intensive acting and theater workshop is free to all. NSO Teddy Bear Concert: Bears, Bears Everywhere
National Symphony Orchestra musicians Paula Akbar, Lewis Lipnick and Joe Connell take a peek at bears and the sounds of their homelands, Jan. 9, 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., at the Kennedy Center. Children's Chorus of Washington Auditions

The 2010 Children's Gallery of Black History
This year’s Children’s Gallery of Black History has the theme: “Rise Up! The Journey for Economic Empowerment Worldwide” and will celebrate those who pushed against the odds to attain community and financial sustainability. Visitors will be able to participate in hands-on learning exhibits that explore the life and achievements of visionary minority leaders. The gallery will pay tribute to eight momentous men and women, including Nina Simone, Carter G. Woodson, Dikembe Mutombo and A. Philip Randolph.
