HEW FCU Awards Scholarships to Woodson Seniors
In June, HEW Federal Credit Union awarded $1,000 scholarships to Marnika Kitchings and Jamal Lowe, two graduating seniors from HD Woodson Senior High School (5500 Eads St. NE). Kitchings and Lowe were chosen because of their service to HEW’s student-run Warrior Branch, where they served their peers and members of the school’s faculty and staff for the past two years. Kitchings, the class valedictorian, will attend Claflin University in South Carolina this fall; Lowe will attend Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina in the fall. Welcome Maury’s New Principal
Last month, DC Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee announced that Carolyne Albert-Garvey had accepted the position of school principal for Maury Elementary School, effective Aug. 3. Garvey was most recently the principal of Friendship Public Charter School’s Chamberlain Campus at 1345 Potomac Ave. SE. CHAW Fall 2009 Youth Arts Programs
Register your child (ages 5-14) now for the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop afterschool youth arts programs, which run Aug. 24-Dec. 18. The National Children’s Museum will host the following activities for children in August at the National Harbor’s Launch Zone.
Fish of the Potomac: Aug. 3, 5, 7, noon-4 p.m., and Aug. 8, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Learn all about the fish that live in the Potomac River, then use fish printing to make “underwater” artwork.
Music Workshop: Aug. 10, 12, 14, noon-4 p.m., and Aug. 15, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Explore various musical instruments from around the world, then make an instrument – like a shaker, tambourine or cool drum to bring home.

Discovery Theater Shows for August
“Artful Animals at Play,” Aug 6-7, 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the African Arts Museum. Kenyan storyteller Anna Mwalagho will lead interactive stories about the animal kingdom of “Artful Animals” with songs, tales, and call and response to actively involve even the youngest imaginations. The performance will be followed by a visit to the gallery to experience this special exhibit, created just for children and their adults from the collections of art and objects of the continent of Africa. Beautification Day 2009
Beautification Day, the annual event established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all DC public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school, will be held Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and DCPS needs volunteers at over 100 schools for landscaping, picking up trash, light painting, planting flowers, sweeping sidewalks and other external beautification efforts.
