Thanks to the Kingsman Basketball League, the court off the1300 block of D Street NE really got a work out this summer, with several new teams joining the competition. In the end, it came down to the same two semi-finalists as last year – the league champions, the Mount Olive Titans against last year's runners-up, the Exodus Disciples. The teams were well matched and the score excruciatingly close until the last few seconds, when the Titans squeaked out a narrow victory.
The spectators had nearly as much fun as the players – especially long-time “season ticket holder” Aaron Kenner, who shouted encouragement and advice from the sidelines. Having a dynamic announcer, Jerome “JT” Hicks, calling the game enhanced the experience for everyone.
At half-time the Most Valuable Person award went to Andre Sullivan, who has led the league through 10 seasons. The success of the league is due to the coaches, referees and time keeper, among others – and to Sullivan for organizing their efforts. All insist upon good sportsmanship and personal responsibility – which shows in both the performance and attitude of the players.
The league would like to thank the Capitol Hill Community Foundation and ANC 6A for their recent grants and would welcome additional support. If you can help, contact Andre Sullivan, 301-642-2247. |
