Hill East Woman in 'Serious' Condition After Car Vs. Bicycle Crash

EMTs Extracted the Woman from Beneath the SUV

Police had to extract a woman from beneath a car after a crash on the 400 block of 12th Street SE around 4:40 p.m. on May 30. The woman was riding a bicycle when a Mercedes SUV hit her.

Neighbors on the Lincoln Park Listserv said witnesses had to jump in front of the SUV driver to stop the car after it hit the woman. She was trapped underneath.

Police Investigate Tire Slashings in Hill East

At Least Eight Cars Had Tires Slashed Monday Night

Owners of at least eight vehicles in the Hill East neighborhood woke up May 30 to find their tires slashed. Many had parked in an alley between Independence Avenue SE and A Street SE near the Stadium-Armory Metro station. The large alley provides off-street parking for many families with small children.

DC Partners With Sasha Bruce for Missing Children

Police Will Start to Take Found Children to the House for Assessment First

DC will start taking found missing children to the Sasha Bruce House in Northeast DC for assessment before returning them to their homes, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced in late May. The plan comes as a recommendation from the task force Bowser put together after confusion over the number of missing children in DC earlier this spring.

The City’s Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) will build up the program at Sasha Bruce with more staff and an evaluation standard.

Commemorate Memorial Day with Poppy Flowers

The Capitol Hill American Legion Auxiliary Will Hand the Flowers Out May 27

Help commemorate Memorial Day and remember veterans this weekend with crepe paper poppy flowers from the Capitol Hill American Legion Auxiliary. The women of the auxiliary will offer the poppies in exchange for a donation on May 27 at Eastern Market along Seventh Street SE.

Stores and other supporters of the Poppy Drive will put out donation collecting cans, some at Radici Market (303 Seventh St. SE), at the American Legion Post 8 on the corner of Third and D Streets SE and others. The funds will go to support DC Veterans’ Creative Arts Festival in November.

There’s a flash of beak and a flick of the wing at Hill Center where third grade students at Brent Elementary School (301 North Carolina Ave. SE) have created a delightful aviary on the walls of the Young Artists Gallery.

Eastern HS Students Tour GWU with Serve Your City

Serve Your City (SYC), a Capitol Hill-based nonprofit organization and its George Washington University student chapter, Serve Your City-GWU, recently hosted 12 youth from Eastern High School on a tour of the campus. For many of the youth it was the first opportunity to spend time on a college campus.
