Two years after the murder of Hill Rag reporter Charnice Milton, WeAct Radio in Ward 8 has plans to open a community bookstore in her honor. Kymone Freeman, activist and co-owner of WeAct, will host an announcement event for the Charnice Milton Community Bookstore on May 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the radio’s studio at 1918 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. SE. First District Commander Morgan Kane updated commissioners on what police and DC agencies can and can’t do in handling the homeless population that camps in tents under the L, M and N Street underpasses in NoMa. She spoke at the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6C May meeting. Some of DC’s residents have decided to fight DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s plans to cut the recycling and waste budget by $477,000 in the Fiscal Year 2018 budget with a petition to Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3). Two police cars collided and a single gunshot rang out in two separate instances near Potomac Gardens on the 1200 block of I Street SE around 6:18 p.m. on May 13. The officers in the accident received minor injuries from the crash, and collided while responding to a request for more police during multiple arrests on the block, First District Commander Morgan Kane wrote in a message to the community. Grab your neighbors—this weekend starts the first Eastern Market Main Street Market Week! Running from May 14 to 21, the market week will celebrate local Eastern Market businesses with a series of events all week, culminating in Night at the Market. The annual Day of the Dog Festival at Congressional Cemetery has moved from Saturday, May 13, to Sunday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this year due to expected weather. The 5K and Kids Fun Run will still go on for May 13 at 9:30 a.m. at the cemetery (1801 E St. SE). Participants celebrate everything dog related in a nice walking spot usually reserved for the Cemetery’s K9 Corps members. Neighbors on Capitol Hill have rallied to help a beloved swimming coach at the Rumsey Aquatic Center after a bullet paralyzed him when a mugger attacked and shot him in April near his Southeast home. Friends have opened up a Go Fund Me fundraiser with a goal of $10,000 to help pay for coach Zaan Scott’s recovery costs and rehabilitation for his injuries.
