Councilmember Charles Allen (Wad 6-D) and Mayor Muriel Bowser were on hand at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 17 for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Watkins Elementary School (420 12 Street SE). The ceremony celebrated the completion of the $44 million modernization of the school, which was built in 1962. The modernization includes a 26,338 square foot addition that consists of new administrative spaces, an outdoor classroom, state-of-the-art media center, and a new cafeteria and gym. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced Thursday that they had made an arrest in the July 26th shooting murder of a 37 year-old man on the Anacostia River Trail. At about 8:30 a.m. that day, members of the Sixth District were dispatched to the listed the trail south of the 3300 block of East Capitol Street SE after reports of a shooting. The Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee (EMCAC) held its second public hearing on the future status of Seventh Street SE. The Committee continued to seek comment on the issue of whether or not the 200 and 300 blocks of Seventh Street –the site of three outdoor markets – should remain closed to weekend traffic after the Hine School Project is complete. Change keeps coming to the Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Stadium Campus. For the past six weeks, the Skate Park at RFK has been closed for a transformation by local artist Naturel. A man with a swastika tattoo on his abdomen was asked to leave by staff at William H. Rumsey Aquatic Center (635 North Carolina Ave SE) at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
