Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Brian Flahaven (6B-09) will resign his position Friday, Jan. 15. Flahaven has decided to spend more time with his family. He and his wife are preparing for the expected birth of a child in April. Flahaven has served the Ward 6 community since 2010.

“While I’ve greatly enjoyed serving our neighborhood, it has been a significant time commitment with many evenings spent at meetings instead of with my family,” Flahaven wrote on his website. “As we prepare to grow, I’m looking forward to prioritizing family time over the coming months.”

Flahaven represented his neighborhood in an engaging, thoughtful and clever manner, said ANC 6B Chair Kirsten Oldenburg. He kept his decorum even when faced with frustrating and difficult decisions.

Flahaven established the Hill East Task Force. He served led the commission as chair in 2013 and 2014. During his tenure as the ANC's parliamentarian, he rewrote the commission’s bylaws.

“He has been my wise counselor throughout 2015, my year as chair,” Oldenburg said. “We will miss him.”

Flahaven will likely continue to work on the development of Reservation 13; and serve as a strong opponent of any deal to build a new football stadium on the site of RFK Stadium.

The ANC Board of Elections will hold a special election to fill Flahaven’s seat until the end of his term in January 2017.
