The Holy Comforter St. Cyprian Community Action Group (CAG) officially opened its doors at its new headquarters in the Hill East at 124 15th St. SE April 28.  The CAG’s new Harold J. Gordon Building will house its administrative offices and host its educational programs for those suffering from substance abuse.

No medications or medical staff will work at the 15th Street site, as CAG President Janice Gordon confirmed with the Hill Rag in a previous article. CAG focuses on educational and spiritual approach to rehabilitation.

“Many individuals came into our building and shared about their history of drug use in the 15th Street corridor in years prior to CAG’s arrival,” Gordon said in a release.  “Many of these same individuals are now respected members of their communities through education, finding employment and raising families.”

Gordon also envisions the new building as a community space for organizations to host events, meetings and possibly shows with groups like the Anacostia Playhouse. CAG had hosted educational and social events at the site before the redevelopment, and wants to continue the community relationship.

“Our goal now, is to give back even more to the community, and to bring the community into our efforts, as volunteers and partners,” she said.

DC's Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) funded the construction at a cost of over $3 million. The new building has a commercial kitchen, auditorium with a raised stage, parking and office spaces.

The CAG started its 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1988 in the carriage house outside the Old Naval Hospital—now the Hill Center (921 Pennsylvania Ave. SE). The new building is named after Harold J. Gordon, the founder of the CAG.
