Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen had been appointed as Second Vice Chair for the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) in 2016. He joins Chairman Timothy Lovain of Alexandria, Va., First Vice Chair Bridget Newton of Rockville, Md.

Allen said he appreciates the board selecting him for the position. He rides the Metro to work nearly every day and understands the importance of a reliable transit option for the people in the city.

“Whether working on pedestrian, car, bus, or bicycle transportation, this new role will allow me an opportunity to work with colleagues from Virginia and Maryland to solve some of the greatest challenges facing our growing region,” he wrote in an email to the Hill Rag. "These include moving people safely through the Metro area, supporting business growth, and setting spending priorities for federal and local transportation dollars.”

The TPB board collaborates to solve issues of transportation in and around the DC region. During their December meeting, Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) board member Harriet Tregoning spoke on the Disruct legislators and transit teams collaborating to Increase funding to support a rapidly growing transit demand.

TPB members, including Allen, suggested WMATA propose a prepared plan to local decision makers so they can see what the available funds would support. They also discussed Metro increasing resources for security on Metro trains.

The outgoing board members include Phil Mendelson, Mark Rawlings and Bob Summersgill.
