Deputy Chief of Staff to US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid Files Papers
Darrel Thompson is organizing an Exploratory Committee for candidacy for the Ward 6 City Council. Thompson currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intergovernmental and External Affairs to US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid. In this capacity, he advises Reid on national labor and employment issues including: workplace rules and regulations; business and labor negotiations; job growth and protection; social justice issues involving the faith and African-American communities; as well as issues affecting the District of Columbia.
Prior to joining Reid's staff, Thompson served as the Chief of Staff for the Barack Obama for US Senate Campaign. Earlier, he served as the Finance Chief of Staff and National Political Advisor for Congressman Richard Gephardt’s 2004 Presidential Campaign. Thompson has held several senior positions during Gephardt’s tenure as House Democratic Leader. Thompson was also the Deputy Executive Director of the House Democratic Caucus; and worked as Financial Services Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
A native Washingtonian, Thompson grew up in The District and Baltimore, MD. He has lived on Capitol Hill for almost 20 years. Currently, Thompson and his wife, Dr. Britt Weinstock, reside in the northeast section of the neighborhood.
Thompson holds a Master in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Morgan State University.
“The future of Ward 6 and the District of Columbia needs new leadership and new ideas in order to overcome new and existing challenges,” states his press release. If he moves forward, Thompson expects to focus his campaign on issues of public education and meaningful job growth.
“This brighter future also means new leaders must work to ensure safety and security so that all residents in Ward 6 can enjoy a safe jog or walk of the dogs, and carefree time with family and friends throughout our many great neighborhoods.”
