Ditto Residential announced plans Jan. 31 to join the development of townhouse condos and apartments at Watkins Alley, next to Frager’s Hardware and bounded by 1309-1323 E St. SE and 516 13th St. SE. Construction is set to start in 2018.

Martin Ditto, president of the DC-based property development company, will mesh his modern approach to design with OPal LLC’s vision, first reported on by the Washington Business Journal. A warehouse, parking lot and car service business currently sit on the site. Plans for the development include 29 townhouse condos and 15 apartments, styled in the historic brick of the surrounding neighborhood.

Ditto’s other projects include the Edmonds School (901 D St. NE), a historic home at 541 Seventh St. SE and the apartment building Hendrix (1326 Florida Ave. NE).

Right across the street, Foulger-Pratt will start its redevelopment of the Safeway building and lot in 2018, too. This will include 320-325 residential apartments and an expanded 60,000-square-foot Safeway store. (Read more from the Hill Rag’s coverage here.)
