East City Bookshop Opens This Weekend

Grand Opening Celebration Planned for April 30

Pick up a book or two at East City Bookshop’s grand opening celebration on April 30. The celabration begins at 10 a.m. and continues to 8 p.m.. The shop is located at at 645 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Suite 100.

Storeowner Laurie Gillman plans a full day of author signings, a scavenger hunt, live local music and children’s book readings. Visitors can participate in doorbuster prizes like coupons for books. Here’s a full schedule:

Children’s Book Readings and Activities

  • 10 to 10:30 a.m. — Dr. Courtney Davis reading “’A’ Is for Anacostia” and “’S’ Is for Southside”
  • 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. — Zine creation for kids
  • 11 to 11:30 a.m. — Dr. Rebecca Klemm reading "Numbers Alive!"
  • 12 to 12:30 p.m. — a literary scavenger hunt for children and parents

Young Adult and Adult Readings

  • 12 to 12:30 p.m. — Critically acclaimed author Frederick Reuss
  • 1 to 1:30 p.m. — New York Times bestseller Louis Bayard
  • 2 to 2:30 p.m. — Young adult fantasy author Hannah Sternberg
  • 3 to 3:30 p.m. — Graphic novel talk by DC Conspiracy Creators: Eisner Award nominee Evan Keeling, Michael Cowgil and Andrew Cohen
  • 4 to 5 p.m. — Storytelling Workshop by Louise Dettman

East City Bookshop After Dark

  • 5 to 8 p.m. — Drinks, hors d’oeuvres, jazz by the Captones and readings
  • 6 p.m. — featured author Andrea Kleine, author of “Calf”

April 30 is also Independent Bookstore Day. The shop will feature new releases from authors Neil Gaiman, Ann Patchett and Kate DiCamillo.
