A fire that apparently started on a playground bench at Miner Elementary School (601 15 St. NE) was extinguished by DC Fire Department late Thursday evening.

The DC Fire Department responded to a call received at around 8 p.m. reporting an outside fire at Miner Elementary School. When they arrived, they found that a bench located near the building in the playground area was on fire. DC Fire was able to stop the blaze before it spread into the structure, though heat from the fire cracked the window above the bench. The bench is twisted and melted.

No damage was done to the interior of the school, and no injuries were reported.

A spokesperson for DC Public Schools (DCPS) says that the students at Miner can still use the playground. A barrier has been erected around the impacted area and as is usual, an adult will supervise students while they use the playground.

A DC Fire Investigator is looking into the cause of the fire.
