Frager’s Sold to Owners of Logan Hardware
John Weintraub, the owner of Frager’s Hardware since 1975, has agreed to sell the 100-year old Capitol Hill institution to A Few Cool Hardware Stores (AFCHS). AFCHS is the owner of the famous Logan Hardware. As an AFCHS operation, Frager’s will join the Ace Hardware Cooperative.
“Frager's is a thriving operation with a fantastic staff and we've proven that we can adapt and innovate to meet changing circumstances and evolving customer needs here on Capitol Hill. Teaming up with AFCHS will strengthen and energize both operations and ensure our customers and community receive the same high quality service we've built our business on for generations to come,” Weintraub said.
AFCHS is owned by Gina Schaefer and Marc Friedman. The two founded Logan Hardware in 2003. They expanded this successful operation to 11 stores located in DC, Baltimore, Takoma Park (MD) and Alexandria. While maintaining the store’s existing strong community focus, they plan to incorporate Frager’s existing staff into their 300-person operation.
“Marc and I are extremely proud to continue the Frager’s legacy on Capitol Hill. We have admired John and his operation since the day we opened our first location in 2003 and are looking forward to meeting our new community,” says Schaefer. “The existing Frager’s team is what makes this store so special. We look forward to working with them,” she said.
“Aside from bringing the company’s unique blend of personal, knowledgeable and helpful service and home maintenance expertise to the Capitol Hill community, customers can expect to see the same local charm that’s drawn customers to its doors since it opened in 1920,” the press release announcing the sale stated.
AFCHS is committed to moving forward with the existing plans to move Frager's into a Perseus development at the site of the original store, said Weintraub.
“I've always been impressed with Gina and Marc's success in opening hardware stores in urban neighborhoods and building strong community networks,” stated Weintraub.
“John Weintraub and Frager’s have been extraordinary supporters of our Capitol Hill community in so many ways,” stated Nicky Cymrot, President of the Capitol Hill Community Foundation (CHCF). “The foundation has always known that when there are needs, we can always turn to John and Frager’s for assistance. We hope that the example they offered of a concerned, committed neighborhood business will continue under the store’s new ownership,” she stated.
Councilmember Charles Allen (D-Ward 6) said, “Across Capitol Hill, almost every home has a Frager's story to tell. Whether a small project or a large renovation, everyone can point to something made better with supplies or know-how from Frager's Hardware."
"I wish John and his family the very best, and some much deserved rest. I'm also excited they found a partner with a proven track record of understanding what a neighborhood hardware store should look like. I have every expectation that Gina Schafer and the team at Logan Hardware will carry on Frager's work as an anchor of our community,” Allen continued.
The change in ownership will be celebrated this summer with a community party and sale. To learn more, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
