Frager's Hardware to Open Location on Pennsylvania Avenue Vacant Lot

Frager's Hardware is planning to erect a temporary structure on a vacant lot at 1230 Pennsylvania Ave. SE. The new location will eventually house hardware, garden and rental operations, temporarily situated at 1323 E St. SE and on the Eastern Market pad. The planned opening is in June of 2014.

The lot fronts both Pennsylvania Ave. and E St SE. The latter section, containing the historic shotgun house, will fenced off and excluded from Frager's operations. The property is owned by Larry Quillian, a local real estate developer.

“The temporary structure on the 1230 lot is an important step in getting the business back on track. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to bring more departments under one roof, providing greater convenience for our loyal customers,” said Frager's owner John Weintraub.

“We truly appreciate the hospitality extended by the city and maintained by the Stanton-EastBanc developers. However, we know when construction gets underway, we’ll need to have a place to go,” said Weintraub.

Frager’s Hardware has begun work on the site with relevant city agencies and a team of technical experts. Last night, Weintraub held a meeting with neighbors to explain his plans

"I am excited that Frager's is working to literally rise from the ashes, put our neighbors back to work, and bring additional commerce to the neighborhood. I expect they'll continue to be the good neighbors that they've always been to the Capitol Hill community," ANC Commissioner Nicole Opkins (6B06).

“This new location will bring foot traffic to an otherwise blighted lot. It will provide our community with needed services. I also hope it will also allow Frager's to rehire laid off staff as well,” stated Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Kirsten Oldenburg (ANC 6B04), who is a nearby resident and former employee of Frager's.
