On September 24th, Friendship Public Charter School celebrated the grand opening of a state-of-the-art $18 million facility in Anacostia with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Friendship Tech Prep Academy will serve students in grades six through 12 and specialize in STEM-science, technology, engineering, math disciplines and environmental sciences.
Tech Prep’s first senior class will graduate in 2015. The state of the art campus was built on the site of an abandoned McDonald’s and includes a SMART--science, math, and research technology--lab, a robotics lab, two chemistry and two biology labs, a rooftop greenhouse and a green roof. Steps away from what is about to become the new Department of Homeland Security headquarters, the new facility adds to the regeneration of one of the most underserved areas of the city.
At Tech Prep Academy, Friendship Public Charter School hopes to continue its tradition of providing a high-quality tuition free public education in underserved areas, with high on-time graduation rates as well as a high college acceptance rate for its students. Friendship’s Collegiate Academy in Ward Seven has a 97 percent on-time graduation rate and 100 percent of the graduating class accepted to college.
Friendship Public Charter School holds its students to high academic standards, teaching them the 21st-century skills they need to succeed and preparing them for the rigor of a college education. –Amy Benson. Friendship PCS, 620 Milwaukee Place SE, www.friendshipschools.org.
