Grab a Book and a Cupcake on Independent Bookstore Day

Fairy Godmother Bookstore, East City Bookshop Celebrate April 29

Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with your Capitol Hill bookstores this Saturday, April 25.

Fairy Godmother Children’s Bookstore (319 Seventh St. SE) is celebrating with free books for children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children can get one free copy of a used, out of print or slightly worn book ranging from toddler to young adult level. Fairy Godmother has served Capitol Hill as an independent bookstore for more than 33 years.

East City Bookshop (645 Pennsylvania Ave. SE) will celebrate the day, which doubles as the shop’s first anniversary of its opening. The whole day will involve activities and promotions, but the store will host its “birthday” party from 6 to 8 p.m. Customers can sip on a free signature cocktail, listen to DC-based pop-rock musician Derek Evry, take a picture in the photo booth and mingle with local authors.
