A Holiday Prayer

If man, as a species,

   rises to the occasion

And takes the heavens

   by storm—

If we triumph over every element

   and elemental force

That reality has contrived—

   that endless universes

Have sprawled beyond our

   infinitesimal species’ consciousness—

If then, in some eternal tomorrow,

   and after we’ve learned

All that there is to know,

   we should turn, at last,

Our spectacular corporate judgment

   upon ourselves

And ask this one,

   quintessential question:

What have we achieved?

I pray the answer will be: Love.
