Miner Elementary (601 15th St. NE) in Ward 6 recorded at least three cases of bed bugs on students’ clothing Feb. 9, 14 and 15, according to DC Public Schools.
"We’re continuing to monitor the situation, but we don’t believe that this is a widespread infestation," said DCPS spokesperson Janae Hinson in an email.
The custodians at Miner also trapped several rodents recently and reviewed all protocol for identifying and reporting pests on Feb. 15.
Principal Andrea Mial sent a note to parents Feb. 15 outlining DCPS’s and the Department of General Services’ standard operations for “routine maintenance” and cleaning when it comes to pest like rodents and bed bugs. She didn’t specifically mention the reported cases.
This is the second incident of bed bug and rodent problems for DCPS after the district closed Savoy Elementary (2400 Shannon Place SE) on Feb. 6 due to infestation.
