Payne Elementary School (1445 C St. SE) will get a new principal starting in the 2016-2017 academic school year, DC Public Schools (DCPS) announced June 8. Stephanie Byrd will lead the school after serving nearly 20 years in the District.

Byrd comes in as the third principal in the last two years at Payne. In the summer of 2015, former Payne principal Vielka Scott-Marcus stepped down from her position despite parents’ passionate petitions and calls for her to stay. Annie Mair has filled Scott-Marcus’ place as interim-principal for the past year.

Byrd comes to Payne from DCPS’ Mary Jane Patterson Fellowship for Aspiring Principals program, which started in 2013 to give DCPS employees the skills and education to pursue principal positions in the District schools.

“As a District native, Byrd leads by building community both inside and outside of the school building, all in service of academic excellence,” DCPS said in a statement.

Byrd holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Howard University (2400 Sixth St. NW) and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from The George Washington University (2121 I St. NW). She has previously worked at Woodson High School (3950 Chesapeake St. NW), J.O. Wilson Elementary (660 K St. NE) and at other DC schools as a kindergarten, first grade and special education teacher; an academic dean; a director of school operations; and an assistant principal.
