J. Raymond "Ray" Bowers, the longtime proprietor of Bowers Fancy Dairy Products at the historic Eastern Market, died in his sleep. The "Cheese Man" was a regular presence at the Market since his father Harris Rockford Bowers purchased the cheese stall in 1964.

Bowers is survived by his son Michael, who has managed the shop in rescent years. A small memorial has been established at the stand to allow friends to express their condolences.

Bowers Fancy Dairy Products will be closed today, Nov. 15, and tomorrow. The stand will reopen this Saturday.

Ray Bowers...

Mr. Bowers was my doorway to the weird life of cheese. Through him and his "pusher man" demeanor, my love graduated from Kraft to Smoked Gouda with Parmesan. His kind and welcoming smile plus sharp wit will surely be missed. Rest well Cheese Man, rest well.
