The National Christmas Tree Lighting Will Close Several Downtown Roads

Commuters beware of several road closures Thursday Dec. 3 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the downtown DC area. The 93rd National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will start at 5 p.m. on the Ellipse in front of the White House, but the National Park Service will close surrounding outlets and detour Metro buses for the entire afternoon. Traffic and Metro delays could affect Capitol Hill residents, too. 

The ticketed event is sold out. People with tickets can enter the Ellipse on 17th Street NW. 

Road closures:

  • Jefferson Drive from 14th to 15th streets NW;
  • Pennsylvania Ave. from 14th to 15th streets NW;
  • Madison Drive from 14th to 15th streetsNW;
  • 17th St. NW from Independence Ave. to New York Ave. NW;
  • 15th St. NW from Independence Ave. to New York Ave. NW;
  • Consitution Ave. from 14th to 18th streets NW.

Bus routes delayed or detoured:

  • 3Y, 7Y, 11Y, 16X, 16Y, 30N, 30S, 32, 33, 36, 37, 38B, 39, 42, 43, 52, 53, 54, 80, D1, D3, D5, D6, G8, H1, L1, L2, N2, N3, N4, P6, P17, P19, S1, S2, S4, S9, W13, X1 and X2.

Temporary stops:

  • 11Y, G8, X2, W13, P17, and P19 start at Franklin Square
  • X1 starts at 10t St. NW and Constitution Ave.
  • H1, N3 and L1 start at 19th St. NW and Virginia Ave.
