Rock and Roll Marathon No-Parking Zones and Road Closures

Runners, walkers and drivers — prepare for the 2016 Rock and Roll Marathon this Saturday, March 12, by first checking road closures and transit changes. The annual race affects roads from about 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. as around 25,000 runners trek around the city.

Racers start at the intersection of Constitution Avenue NW and 12th Street NW, but will affect Capitol Hill residents near and on East Capitol the most. The half marathon and full marathon finish on East Capitol Street near RFK Stadium and the full marathon routes around Lincoln Park and up East Capitol Street.

Roads (Capitol Hill area)

  • East Capitol Street NE will close from 22nd to 19th streets NE and from 11th to Second streets NE
  • Residents can cross East Capitol at police barricade points on Fourth, Sixth, Eighth and Tenth streets.
  • Pennsylvania Avenue SE will close westbound from Fourth to Second streets SE
  • Independence Avenue SE will close eastbound from Second to Third streets SE
  • Third Street SE will close from East Capitol to E streets SE

Starts service at 5 a.m. Saturday. The race finishes near Stadium Armory, so beware crowds in the early afternoon.

Also note, SmarTrip cards are required on Metro now — no paper fare tickets as of March 6.


Riders can request a free special transfer from bus to Metro. Routes affected: 30N, 30S, 31, 32, 34, 36, 42, 52, 54, 64, 70, 74, 79, 80, 90, 92, 96, A42, A46, A48, B2, D4, D6, D8, G2, G8, H2, H4, L2, M6, P6, S2, S4, U5, U6, X2 and X8.

DC Circulator

  • National Mall route: delayed until 10 a.m.
  • Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-McPherson Square route: no stops between 14th and U streets NW from 7 a.m. to noon.

DC Streetcar

The streetcar running from Union Station to Benning Road NE will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
