The Union Market Opens Its Doors

The Union Market, located at 1309 5th St. NE, opened to large crowds this past Saturday. Visitors flocked to see the city’s latest foodie paradise. The most popular stall was the new bar operated by the Rappahannock Oyster Company. While many may have been deterred by the long line, the oysters were certainly worth the effort. Meaty and fresh, they brought the taste of the ocean to the tongue.

Capitol Hill residents will no doubt see many old friends among the stalls. Peregrine Expresso has opened its third location in the Union Market. Also, Blue Iris, a longtime Eastern Market presence, had a popup presence as well.

This writer, however, was captured by Craig the Shepard, the owner of Border Springs Farm, an heritage lamb producer well beloved by many of Washington’s famous chefs. After dining on samples of merguez, a delicious mutton-based sausage common throughout the Middle East, he could not resist boneless leg of lamb at $8 a pound.

Currently, The Union Market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
