UPDATED: Capitol Hill Closure Timeline for the Inauguration

A List of Road Closures, Parking Restrictions and Transportation for Jan. 18-20

DC has put together a comprehensive list of street closures, parking restrictions, pedestrian routes, prohibited items and public transportation options for this week’s 58th Inauguration.

Here is a look at what to expect in the Ward 6 and Capitol Hill area from Jan. 18-20. Check inauguration.dc.gov for the list for the entire District and surrounding Virginia and Maryland routes.

Street closures

— Wednesday, Jan. 18:

— Thursday, Jan. 19:

  • 1 a.m. no-parking restrictions start around Union Station;
  • 7 a.m. no-parking restrictions start for the green zone region (link to street list here);
  • 2 -11 p.m. street closures around Union Station;
  • 5 p.m. street closures around the Capitol, including Washington Avenue SW from C Street SW to Independence Avenue SW northbound, and East Capitol Street from First Street to Second Street.

— Friday, Jan. 20:

  • 3 a.m. all streets in red zone close until the end of the parade around 6 p.m.

*Bicycles cannot come into the red zone region on Jan. 20.

*Be prepared to show proof of residency and identification if you need access to a zoned region. Only authorized personnel can enter the red zone.

Here’s a list of the streets closing around Capitol Hill starting at 11 p.m. on Thursday:

  • Louisiana Avenue NE between Columbus Circle and Constitution Avenue NW;
  • Delaware Ave NE between Columbus Circle and D Street NE;
  • First Street between Columbus Circle and D Street SE;
  • North Capitol Street between E Street NW and D Street NE;
  • New Jersey Avenue NW between D Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW;
  • D Street between New Jersey Avenue NW and Second Street NE;
  • First Street between D Street NW and Washington Avenue SW;
  • C Street NW between Second Street NW and Second Street NE;
  • Second Street NW between C Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW;
  • Second Street NE between Massachusetts Avenue NE and C Street SE;
  • C Street SE between Second Street SE and Fourth Street SW;
  • D Street between First Street SE and Fourth Street SW;
  • Washington Avenue SW between South Capitol Street and Independence Avenue SW;
  • Independence Avenue between Third Street SE and Fourth Street SW;
  • Third Street between E Street SW and D Street NW;
  • Constitution Avenue between Second Street NE and Third Street NW;
  • Maryland Avenue NE between First Street NE and Constitution Avenue, NE;
  • Second Street SW between Washington Avenue SW and E Street SW;
  • South Capitol Street between E Street SW and D Street SW;
  • I-295 South on-ramp from Washington Avenue SW;
  • I-395 North off-ramp onto Washington Avenue SW;
  • I-395 North off-ramp onto C Street NW;
  • I-395 South on-ramp from Second Street SW;
  • I-395 South off-ramp onto Second Street SW;
  • I-395 North on-ramp from Washington Avenue SW;
  • I-295 North off-ramp onto Washington Avenue SW.

Union Station closures from 2-11 p.m. on Jan. 19:

  • Massachusetts Avenue NE (North Capitol Street NE to Third Street NE);
  • Columbus Circle NE (All Lanes. All Directions);
  • Louisiana Avenue NE (North Capitol Street NE to Columbus Circle NE);
  • First Street NE (K Street NE to Massachusetts Avenue NE);
  • G Street NE (North Capitol Street NE to First Street NE);
  • G Place NE (North Capitol Street NE to First Street NE);
  • H Street NE (North Capitol Street NE to Third Street NE);
  • Second Street NE (I St NE to Massachusetts Avenue NE);
  • G Street NE (Second Street NE to Third Street NE);
  • F Street NE (Second Street NE to Third Street NE);
  • E Street NE (Second Street NE to Third Street NE).

Metro will open at 4 a.m. and close at midnight on Jan. 20, during which Metro will charge peak fare from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Archives, Mt. Vernon Square, Federal Triangle, Smithsonian and Pentagon stops will be closed.
  • Buses will run Saturday service schedule routes. Police will detour about 50 of those routes, so beware of delays.

Pedestrian routes near the Capitol Hill area include:

  • Third Street NE and Massachusetts Avenue NE to D Street SE to New Jersey Avenue SE to I Street SE/SW to Seventh Street SW;
  • East Capitol Street NE from 19th Street NE to North Carolina Avenue SE Third Street SE to I Street SE/SW to Seventh Street SW;
  • M Street SW from Fourth Street SW to I Street SW to Seventh Street SW;
  • Seventh Street SW from I Street SW to Independence Avenue SW;
  • 12th Street SW from Maine Avenue SW to Independence Avenue SW;
  • Independence Avenue SW from 23rd Street SW to Seventh Street SW.
