River Reflections

by: Collie Agle
River Reflections is an outgrowth of an interest on the part of several of us “in thinking globally, but acting locally.” It is embedded in the belief that young people will become the next generation of leaders, that their voices (and pictures) are oftentimes more powerful and insightful than those of adults, that they really do have something to say to the world, and that coming together from diverse backgrounds around a common project can create a community out of diversity where little had previously existed.

River Reflections, sponsored by the Anacostia Watershed Society, is a visual exploration of the Anacostia River and the neighborhoods that border it through photographs taken by students. During this first phase, the student photographers come from the Capitol Hill Cluster Schools, the Capitol Hill Day School, and the SEED School in Anacostia.

The Anacostia River is largely unknown, polluted, and suffers from abuse and neglect. It, however, has its own beauty and is potentially an important recreation resource. It also has been a barrier between the communities on the east and the west side of the river.

The project has an ambitious objective: inspire people to greater stewardship, reflection, and deeper understanding of the river and its surrounding communities through eyes, words, and leadership of young people.
