Summer in the City

Cultural Happenings

by: Lisette Atiyeh
Whether you like your music sweet, smooth, or sizzling, something within DC's eclectic mix of summer sounds is sure to strike your fancy. Here, local jazz bands such as Blue Sky 5 and the Ed Hahn Trio rub elbows with well-known Classical groups including the National- and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. In harmony with the DC Metropolitan Area's culturally diverse atmosphere, this summer's music scene also features Latin, Caribbean, and Celtic artists.

Live music and film meet at Wolf Trap, with the NSO providing the complete score of The Wizard of Oz during the movie's screening. Other cinematic highlights include the Silverdocs Film Festival, the Little Italy Open-Air Film Festival, and the Smithsonian Institution's film lectures.

DC's theatrical offerings -- musical and otherwise -- are also varied and rich, catering to both young and mature audiences. Families and theater buffs may choose among such productions as Cinderella, Mamma Mia!, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the American premiere of Headsman's Holiday.

Listed below are some of the exciting sights and sounds coming to the DC Metropolitan Area this summer.
