Business Brief:  Maggie and Lola

Women’s Clothing and Fun Things for Baby!

by: Katie Prevost

Located just two blocks from the Eastern Market Metro, Capitol Hill’s newest store is the bright, colorful, and enchanting Maggie and Lola. A clothing, art, and jewelry boutique for young women, new mothers, stylish moms and children, this once bed and breakfast is the prettiest new face on the Hill. This three part enterprise includes a boutique clothing store, charming garden event space boasting wisteria and orange trees, and rotating art gallery.

Katharine Ordway, owner of Maggie and Lola, loved the location between 10th and 11th  Street, right near Fragers and only two blocks from Barracks Row. The homey space was the perfect spot to make a childhood dream of owning her own business a reality. And he name? As you walk into the store, you’ll meet the shop’s mascot and namesake Lola, the most endearing and sweetest British Black Lab this side of the Atlantic. Maggie and Lola is decorated with comfortable antique furniture, and feel like you are perusing for a wardrobe at your favorite inn. Ordaway, a former resident of trendy cities such as Houston and New York City, lets her personality infuse with the shop-- bubbly, fun, sweet and comfortable.

Maggie and Lola carries an abundance of unique designers - rare in this town- like Calypso, Hudson Demin, Andrea Becker, Chan Luu, Kai Fragrances, Kristen McCloud, and many more. Clothes are laid out for easy viewing and trying on. Feel soft fabrics, let your eye catch a bright shirt boasting numerous patterns, and smell deliciously scented hand soaps. Ordaway hand picks her inventory for its quality, multi-purposes, and timeless appeal. A Calypso peasant, eyelet black skirt with drawstring is an example of a piece suitable for many occasions.

In celebration of Mother’s Day this May, Maggie and Lola is offering all moms living on the Hill 10% off everything in the store. Maggie and Lola is located at 1013 E St., SE. Call 202.234.2850 for information or visit www.maggieandlola.com
